What on Earth is a Biome?

AIM:  Where are the earth's biomes located?

MOTIVATION:  Show students a map of the earth's biomes from the website:
     http://www.richmond.edu/~ed344/webunits/biomes


 

PROCEDURE:
    1.  Have students look at the map and determine where each of the biomes are located.
    2.  Have a discussion on why each biome might be located in a particular place.  Review
    latitude and other factors.
    3. Distribute blank map of the western hemisphere, and have students fill in the biomes of the
    western hemisphere:
 


 

ACTIVITIES:  Students will color-key a map of the biomes of the western hemisphere.

FOLLOW-UP:  This will lead into the next unit (currently in development) on one of the seven biomes we will study in depth-- "The Ocean"
